Beverly Vevienne Goldson, July 11, 1945 to forever

May 30, 2010

My mother lived from July 11, 1945 to May 27, 2010, but the accounts of her death are slightly exaggerated.

Mom cut a path through life.   She was never content to merely be, she was restless, seemingly tireless, and always always on her way somewhere.  In all things she was (how to put it?), uncontainable.  One might as well try to bottle the wind as try to limit Mom.

In the end we’re only human, and must succumb, somehow to our own frailties.  But people who live as my mother did, who refuse to simply let life happen to them but instead must happen to the world, don’t just die.  Such lives, such lights are not simply extinguished.  They leave in their wake the ripples of countless gifts of time, acts of kindness, unintended slights, a few carefully aimed insults, and unintended consequences (one can’t cut a path through life without doing some damage), and heartfelt apologies.   They leave lifelong friends, implacable enemies, devoted admirers, adoring family.

My Mom was such a person.  She sang, she danced, she taught, she suffered, she persevered, she inspired.    She raised us on a diet of imagination, bicycle rides, song, books, ambition, mangoes, plantains, and ‘chicken again!??’.  She traveled the world on a budget of imagination, and determination.   She could, and did, make friends anywhere, everywhere.  In her wake she  leaves children who don’t know how else to live but to move through the world with purpose, who cannot merely let life happen to them, who don’t know what other example to set for her grandchildren.

In the end just a woman, but what a woman!

    Carey,

Thank you for sending your thoughts. I was heading onto the ferry to come see you all, as you were writing this today. What a great description: uncontainable. Keep writing – public or otherwise. It was wonderful to see you, Debra and family. Talk soon,

    Love,

    Allison

  3. As I was reading this description of your mother all I could say was wow, ditto. I only knew her for a short time but it was always a joy to talk with her and be in her company. Her travel stories were spectacular and her attention to detail was second to none. I was inspired by her to say the least.

  4. MAYROTH Says:

Well said Carey, may her soul rest in perfect peace.

    Carey,

It’s difficult as a bystander to find something appropriate to say in the wake of such a huge loss, however its good to find you with words of good memories in her absence. My thoughts are with you.

Carey, Thank you for this and for the eulogy tonite. Your words so encompassed your mother’s spirit and your love and admiration for her was so obvious. Your writing and your speech are so impressive, I urge you to continue to express yourself and share your talents with others. Your mom was so proud of you, Deb and your beautiful families – and with lots of good reasons. Remember that she wants you to be well and happy – so take care of your health – even as you struggle with the injustice of your mom’s death. No matter what she wants you well and healthy for your wife and kids and for a happy life. I’m thinking of all of you at this difficult time. Thank you for sharing your wonderful expression of love. I loved and admired her too and I’m a better person to have been in the presence of her spirit.

I was thinking in honor of your mother’s love for travel why not do a group cruise as a fundraiser for the Family Violence Prevention Fund. I could coordinate that for you through my agency the one she worked with for over 2 years.

So beautiful Carey. May it bring peace to you all to know that her spark lies within you and your precious little girls!!!
